What?
In class, we learned a bout Copyrights and what can happen to you should you "get caught"!
So What?
Well, now that I know I could be facing up to 5 years in jail and fines of up to $500,000, I'll definitely be more careful in my selections of movies, music and pictures in my projects, reports and activities (outside of class). It was really interesting to learn about all of the different Copyright laws / acts that were developed over the years.
Now What?
In my future classroom, whenever showing movies I will definitely be sure to get permission from the movie company themselves. I would rather wait a week or two for a letter in the mail than face 5 years in prison. I also think it'll be important to educate my future students about these Copyright laws as well so that they realize that it's not just something that they should brush to the side. It's important to learn about because Copyrights are LAWS just like speed limits and community rules. After learning about these Copyright laws, I think we all will think twice about the next time we borrow a movie from a neighbor or show something to a mass crowd.

24 February - Digital Stories
What?
We learned about Digital Stories. They're basically the same thing as a vidcast...just better. The music and the words is coordinated with the pictures/movies so that it seems more nicely done and more professional. A lot of the Digital Stories we viewed had a sense of emotional hook to them. They were way cool and pretty interesting.
So What?
So now we get to make some of our own. Using digital stories seems fun. It's a cool way to create projects instead of the regular old book report or whatnot. I feel like we learned about them so that we can learn to use them in the classroom - use them as a way to teach, or a way for students to learn in a new way. My vidcast was really fun to make, and once I've got a simpler version of what a Digital Story is, I feel like I can do it and it will be enjoyable to make also. I can make them for whatever subject I want/need.
Now What?
For my future students, this means that they now have a new way to do their homework! They have a new reason to come to school. It's a new thing to learn too - once they know about how to make a digital story, they can use them for anything throughout their lives. Using Digital Stories in the classroom is a whole new way to teach. I can make a DS outside of class when it's convenient for me, probably my first year of teaching and I can use it (maybe with a few alterations) up until my last. As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, students can use Digital Stories for book reports and other ways of assessment. It could be a term project or a test substitute for visual learners. I think DS will be great in my future classroom - especially in a world that is becoming more and more technologically savvy!

17 February - Vidcast Reflection

Podcast/Vidcast Name: Animals Classification Vidcast
Core Curriculum:
Objective 1: Classify living and nonliving things in an environment.
Indicator A: Identify characteristics of living things (i.e., growth, movement, reproduction).

Core Curriculum:
3rd Grade Science
Standard 2: Students will understand that organisms depend on living and nonliving things within their environment. Objective 1: Classify living and nonliving things in an environment.
Indicator A: Identify characteristics of living things (i.e., growth, movement, reproduction).
I chose to do this topic because I find that animals are very interesting and fun to learn about. I think that kids feel the same way about animals, they’re different from us and so they’re new and exciting to learn about. I picked the animal classifications that I did because they’re the first ones that are introduced to students in Elementary School, and one of the more important areas of learning where the students will actually be able to apply what they use in their young lives outside of school. After having learned about how to classify these animals, they’ll be able to identify them while away from the classroom (i.e...camping, at a friends house, in a museum).
Some of the potential drawbacks could be that the vidcast is not very long. The video is just a short clip and it might be a little confusing to students who have not heard about the classifications of animals before (and most of them will probably have not yet learned about it). The vidcast is also impersonal and could be a little boring for some students.
In using this vidcast, it can be paused for further teaching. I think using the media will be a great way to draw the students interest, and once I have their attention, going into a deeper discussion or lesson won’t be as boring. The clip has a fun song called “The Animal Song” by Savage Garden playing in the background that would be fun for the students to learn. Also, the song playing in the background of the vidcast would be fun to learn as a class.

10 February - Vidcasts
What?
This week we learned about Vidcasts. We also learned about this really cool program called PhotoStory. It's a really neat way to make slideshows and movies with music and captions.
So What?
I think this will be an excellent piece of knowledge that I will be using for the rest of my life. I have always wondered how people make those cute movies - and now I know how! I'll definitely be using Vidcasts for school assignments and projects I do on my own - maybe for a wedding or a family reunion or something like that.
Now What?
Vidcasts are fun. I think my future students will love viewing them and creating them. I also think it's a new great way for them to express themselves as well. I think it'll be fun to use Vidcasts in my classroom so that students can see a piece of my personal life while I teach - this way I'll become more real to them. It'll also be fun for me to see a bit of who they really are outside of school. One way I could use Vidcasts in my classroom could be a "Spotlight" type of project. Students could make a Vidcast instead of a poster to tell about themselves. All in all, I'm very excited about Vidcasts and can't wait to incorporate them in my classroom!

3 February - Podcasts
What?
We learned how to make a podcast, and what a podcast is (which is just a recording available on the web). The easiest way we (me and Chris) figured was to record a voice note on one of our cell phones and then email it to ourselves. We learned some other ways to do it also, one of them was by using a program that only Mac computers have.
So What?
We learned this so that one day we will be able to take advantage of them in our classrooms. Podcasts can be used in some of my other classes, it would be a creative way to do a final project or the likes of that. It's cool that you can just record something and then post it on the web for all to hear! Forget trying out for American Idol, I'll just send them a podcast of me singing!
Now What?
Using podcasts will come in handy for my future students. I can use podcasts for announcements, assignments or even greetings! Once it's online, anyone can access it, including parents and other teachers! It would also be fun for my students to learn about and create their own podcasts and use them for their own assignments. Knowing about this technology opens up a whole new variety of new ways to view school, homework and assignments. I feel like this is fun. I think that podcasts could also be an aid to students struggling in class, if they don't remember what was taught in class, I can record my classes and podcast them.
